SECURE the Job Journey - Day 24

Plan for the Day

  1. Fill out 5+ job app on the spready

  2. Follow up with people getting back to you via email and LinkedIn

  3. Prep for the Sustainability Planner Interview

What I Actually Executed

Just Task 3. That took more time and brain power than expected. Also, I prepped for the  Dept of Watershed Management Career Fair career fair.

Results/Updates

I connected with someone and that turned into the recruiter for a Sustainability Analyst position reaching out to talk to me! Networking works! I didn't even apply for the position!

Reflection

This has been a great week so far. I’m getting my rhythm. I was really hustling backwards thinking the solution was to apply to every job I see without talking to folks. You can never go wrong with reaching out and saying a simple “hey, I would love to learn more about your work.” You learn SOOOO much and it’s an opportunity to practice answering the “tell me about yourself” question in a low stakes environment. It’s all paying off.

I felt so affirmed with the talks. I connected with a fellow black woman in the space. It felt good to learn about her work, but it felt even better to be able to provide info on where to find other black women in the space. I felt useful in a convo lol. Finally, it wasn't just me asking questions, I felt like I had something to bring. Imagine! A whole, entire ME! Wow. After talking with her I even learned that I’m ACTUALLY qualified for data-heavy roles! Wow, I guess I’m really learning what I bring to the Environmental Sustainability table. It made me confident to go for those roles now!

Things are moving! I took a look over my experiences and I think I finally know where my interests are: GIS work, carbon accounting data stuff, and outdoorsy work.

Finally! I’ve figured out where I fit!

I went ahead and created 3 resumes specifically tailored to jobs in each of those arenas. And you KNOW I used the big sis Chat GPT to get it all together.

I feel like since 2018 I’ve just been floating from temporary project to project. I finally know where I can plant my roots and grow - yes, the pun was intended.
